It is the season of the lamprey in Portugal! With It is the season of the lamprey in Portugal!
With lockdown and the rule that restaurants can only serve takeaway, the business of lamprey is suffering like many other businesses, as there is a short season - mid Feb to April - for it and to be honest it is not a consensual flavor (some love it with gusto, some absolutely hatr it!)
In Portuguese cuisine the most common and traditional dishes you make using lamprey are: a dark rice with with lamprey, cooked in its blood and wine, and lamprey "bordalesa" cooked as a stew also in its blood and served with white rice on the side and toasted bread.
The people who love it will drive for hours to go eat it at their favorite restaurant but this year that is not happenning. But some restaurants deliver this delicacy so if you want to try it (or have tried it before and loved it), here are our suggested restaurants: in Lisbon - Solar dos Presuntos and Solar dos Nunes; in Porto - O Gaveto and Adega São Nicolau; in Minho - O Moinho and Mini Zip.

Did you know that Portugal is the only country in Did you know that Portugal is the only country in Europe that produces tea? Did you also know that it was a Portuguese princess, who became Queen of England that brought the afternoon tea custom to the British court?
A nice comforting cup of tea warms the heart and the soul. Have a cupper for us! We'll have one for you!
Thank you @casasantoantoniobritiande for the delic Thank you @casasantoantoniobritiande for the delicious oranges and tangerines! It is a blessing to have friends who share the produce from their farms. This is real fruit! Fruit that smells like fruit, smells amazing once you open it and that oozes the most vibrant aroma! We highly recommend buying from farmers directly or at the farmer's market if you can.
Slow food is about locally sourced ingredients of Slow food is about locally sourced ingredients of the best quality, produces with love and care food that pleasures the senses (not just provide "fuel") and to be consumed with appreciation. In our world this is also the definition of comfort food. When in Douro, we never miss a visit to @tasquinha_do_matias for a pot of a delicious comforting and pleasurable pot of "milhos" (a slow cooked stew with smoked meats, cabbage and cornmeal). This dish is the epitome of comfort, flavor, honest and authentic food. We could not love it more, especially on cold winter days.
We LOVE oysters!!!! And Portuguese oysters are som We LOVE oysters!!!! And Portuguese oysters are some of the best in Europe. But don't take our word for it, join us on an oyster farming tour either in Algarve or Setúbal and be the judge, taste some delicious oysters with sparkling wine and decide for yourself how they rank to any other oysters you have tasted.

Cod fish, glorious cod fish is king at every Portu Cod fish, glorious cod fish is king at every Portuguese table, especially at Christmas time. Throughout the country cooks hassle to soak the salted cod and cook it for family dinner or lunch. Mostly Portuguese Christmas tradition is to eat boiled cod with boiled cabbage, boiled vegetables and boiled eggs at least for one of the meals. Well, in my family we don't follow that tradition and we make a sloooooowly cooked and super flavorful stew. I only eat it at Christmas time and anticipate this meal all year long. It is not a difficult recipe but very labor intensive. I am so very grateful for this tradition and how important it is for keeping he memories of past generations of the family alive. Do you have a food related Christmas tradition that makes you feel comfort and family and home wherever and how confined you are?
Merry Christmas!
If you don't know what "Pão de Ló" is, you are t If you don't know what "Pão de Ló" is, you are totally missing out! "Pão de Ló" is a light and airy and yummy sponge cake made only with eggs, flour and sugar. Throughout Portugal and Europe there are many different variations of the recipe, but we are purists and prefer it plain with a nice comforting cup of tea (or even a nice glass of Port wine). If you find a bakery that makes a fluffy delicious "pão de ló" we are sure that you will become a customer after you try it.
